deathtrap movie review

Deathtrap seems an unusually skillful and satisfying example of devious entertainment. The stage is set for murder, betrayal, and at least an hour and a half of surprises. I think it showcases what a fine actor he really was, before the unfortunate riding accident cut him short. One of very few movies I couldn't instantly solve or predict and worth a second or even third viewing, "Deathtrap" gets a 9/10 and earns every iota of it. The only distraction is a strange character played by Irene Worth a next-door neighbor who's a busybody, snooping psychic who sniffs down false leads. Deathtrap has a positive rating of 75% at Rotten Tomatoes based on 16 reviews, with an average rating of 6.81/10. Or so you think, for the first half of the movie. MRQE Metric: See what the critics had to say and watch the trailer. It could run for years and earn millions of dollars. | Directed by Sidney Lumet. One of the best actors of the last 50 years and in this film as good as he has ever been. It contains mild violence, salty language and sexual innunendoes that should not, for the sake of the plot,be described here. You really see the range in his acting abilities in this movie from "exhaling cheeseburgers" to downright frightening. Christopher Reeve is serviceable and actually grows on you the more you see him act. A work like Deathtrap would've impressed Hitchcock (there's a reference at one point, in due notice, to Dial M For Murder, also based on a play about the intricacies of plotting murder), as it's about the devilish wanton things with characters, and being stylish with camera-work so that nothing is ever too static. Movie Reviews ... SF, Horror and Fantasy Film Review review [4/5] filmcritic.com (Christopher Null) review [3.5/5] Movieman's Guide to the Movies dvd review [3/5] [Blu-Ray Version] The premise is that an accomplished playwright, whose star is falling, receives a magnificent manuscript from a former student and so he plans to off his protege and appropriate his play, to the (loud) protests of his wife. The actor plays him as a little puppy or a homicidal maniac. A plausible plan? Deathtrap is a play written by Ira Levin in 1978 with many plot twists and which references itself as a play within a play. Perhaps. Deathtrap, Noel Coward Theatre, review. The comparison to Sleuth, the earlier stage-play-turned-film, is obvious and upon my first viewing I too thought Sleuth was better, but Deathtrap has, at least for me, many more repeat viewings in it than Sleuth. I saw this when it first came out in the theater, and it was so much fun, with so many plot twists and double-crosses--some you can see coming and some not. | This is a movie one just has to simply watch for themselves because if you are told to much about the film then it would ruin the entire movie. That said, Deathtrap is some easy fun throughout with Caine and Reeve having good chemistry together as the humor and mystery get terrifyingly meta. How about Dyan Cannon? New PS5 Cyberpunk 2077 Gameplay Revealed. There's a certain thrill to watching a film that is in love with its own conceits and cleverness. CW Reboots Walker but Forgets to Give Him a Personality, Something as Extraordinary as Birth Itself: Kornél Mundruczó and Kata Wéber on Pieces of a Woman, 10 Upcoming Films That Could Shake Up Oscar Season, Leslie Odom Jr., Aldis Hodge, Eli Goree, and Kingsley Ben-Adir on the Brotherhood of One Night in Miami. Warner Bros. released Deathtrap to theaters on March 19, 1982.Sidney Lumet directed the film starring Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, and Dyan Cannon. As far as acting goes it is Cris Reeves greatest role as Clifford, a young playwrite. Next Video: Coming Soon! Nothing's more enjoyable for me than a who-dun-it or suspense tale that keeps you guessing throughout as to how the whole thing will end. When the crime and its fallout are unraveling, Deathtrap is nearly mesmerizing; however, the goofy side characters and extended argument scenes (and all the yelling and screaming) wore me out. ... Mortal Kombat 11 Adds 1995 Movie Skins In New DLC. Deathtrap is a film adaptation of a three part play by Ira Levin, famous author of Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives. Definitely one of the most witty and twisted who-dunnit I ever seen. A minor work in the filmography of the author of "Twelve Angry Men", this black humor comedy is nonetheless extremely well crafted and offers as a bonus interesting considerations on the functioning of suspense, on the confrontation of the true, the believable, the false and the fallacious. Deathtrap (1982) - Reviews & Comments. Anyone who has ever labored in frustration with an un-finishable Sunday New York Times crossword knows that any puzzle that takes too long to solve ceases to be any fun. I've seen quite a few of Ira Levin's adaptations - 'Rosemary's Baby' and 'The Stepford Wives' - and liked both them, but this just didn't appeal to me. It is in two acts with one set and five characters. I'll try. Director: Sidney Lumet Cast: Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, Dyan Cannon Distributed by: Warner Bros. Archive Running Time: 116 minutes MPAA Rating: PG Release Date: November 20, 2012 Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars Extras: 1/2 out of 5 stars “Deathtrap” is a fun mix of comedy and cat and mouse genre. Deathtrap is a 1978 Ira Levin play that takes on the concept of what makes a play, a playwright, a thriller and a relationship work. It succeeds, more or less. REVIEW: I saw Deathtrap one Sunday afternoon on cable when I was a kid and just really couldn’t get into it. In the skillful play by Ira Levin (author of "Rosemary's Baby"), filmed with diabolical efficiency by Sidney Lumet, quite on the ball on that one, dramatic turns indeed follow dramatic turns, a sure guarantee of thrills and chills galore. Christopher Reeve was near 30 when he made this movie, right in the middle of his various Superman movies, and his character takes quite a different path here. Let's see. Caine gives another astonishing performance, but I've watched "Deathtrap" three times and that "stormy" resolution always seems barely comprehensible. As for Michael Caine he's.....well he's Michael Caine. They grill him, subtly, and discover that absolutely no one else knows he has written the play. It is fair to observe, however, that "Deathtrap" is a comic study of ancient and honorable human defects, including greed, envy, lust, pride, avarice, sloth, and falsehood. Caine and Cannon invite Reeve to come for a visit to the country. The tables are turned so many times in this movie that you would think they were on wheels. The first time I watched this movie was in my high school drama class, and I must say I enjoyed it very much. Every time you think you have a handle on Deathtrap, another plot twist comes along. Today, I take a look at Deathtrap and try to answer the question, "Is it any good?" | The deviously cynical Michael Caine is delightful as usual while his partner Christopher Reeve (lights years away from "Superman") brilliantly blows hot and cold. Pleasant, friendly and charming one minute, the young actor can give you the looks of Medusa the next one. Director Sidney Lumet, no stranger to film, is quite good for the most part in creating the tension the film needs to motor on. Clifford stabs Sidney, and both men die; leaving Helga as the lone survivor. Both movies can only be enjoyed at their full impact on a first viewing, thereafter the viewer knows what surprises are in store. He shares his pain of failure with his loving wife Myra. Check out the exclusive TVGuide.com movie review and see our movie rating for Deathtrap The twists are a lot of fun. Best to just sit back and enjoy the ride on this one. The film is top-notch. The trick to creating a good, solid mystery story is as much a matter of timing as its about plot contrivances, colorful characters or surprising twists. Thrillers like this don't always bother to pay attention to the human nature of their characters (for example, the Agatha Christie omnibus whodunits, with their cardboard suspects). REVIEW: I saw Deathtrap one Sunday afternoon on cable when I was a kid and just really couldn’t get into it.
